June 08, 1970 - (INES 4 | NAMS 3,6)
LLNL, California, United States
Nuclear research and nuclear weapons development
In 1965 and 1970, the Lawrenz Livermore Lab released approximately 650.000 Curies (23.700 TBq) of tritium into the air from the chimneys of the Tritium Facility (Building 331).
The largest release in LLNL history was about 13.000 TBq in 1965.
The second highest dose comes from the release of 10.700 TBq that took place in 1970.
After the 1965 accident, not much data is available on wind patterns, precipitation, etc., but after the 1970 accident, Livermore Lab scientists found elevated tritium levels that they linked to the 1970 accident, as far south as Fresno, in southeast about 200 miles away.

Nuclear phase-out, next round of the endless debate
After Saxony's Prime Minister Kretschmer, Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder is now repeating the call for the lifespans of Germany's three remaining nuclear reactors to be extended. A debate that never ends. Right?

Nuclear power: Small reactors exacerbate the disposal problem
SMR reactors produce up to 30 times more radioactive waste than normal nuclear power plants
Not a good alternative: Small nuclear reactors are considered a climate-friendly addition to renewable energies - at least among the supporters of Small Modular Reactors (SMR). But now a study reveals that these small reactors produce up to 30 times more nuclear waste per output than conventional nuclear power plants - and this nuclear waste is even more radioactive. The currently booming SMR construction could thus exacerbate the problem of radioactive disposal even further.

Coal phase-out and nuclear power plant plans
In Romania, the power generation market is in transition. The Romanian government has announced that it will phase out coal two years earlier than originally planned – as early as 2030. A law to this effect is to be passed in the near future, as reported by the Europe Beyound Coal network. In addition, according to information from Greenpeace Romania, it is planned that the Romanian state will buy photovoltaic systems with a minimum output of three to five kilowatts for each dismissed miner. These are positive signals, but the coin also has a downside.

How we bring about the collapse
Did you notice that two huge environmental scandals made the news this week? Or that the UN is now openly warning of a “global collapse”? No? That has its reasons.

The class struggle never ends, says Chomsky. The question is which side wins. Today is about the survival of mankind. Only a green revolution can stop the climate catastrophe (Part 2)

Chomsky is Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at MIT and currently Professor at the University of Arizona. He has published around 150 books in the fields of linguistics, political and social theory, political economy, media studies, US foreign policy and international affairs.
Political scientist CJ Polychroniou asks the questions. It's the second part of an interview with Noam Chomsky. The first part is found here. The original in English appeared on the news site truthout.

resistance (politics)
Resistance is the refusal to obey or active opposition to the authorities or the government.
It is initially of secondary importance whether the rulers against whom resistance is being exercised exercise their rule legally, legitimately or illegally. Evaluations such as "justified resistance", goals and means of resistance, moral and legal concerns require an observer's point of view: it depends on who, where and at what time the evaluation is made. The resister will always evaluate the resistance differently than the one against whom the resistance is directed. The latter, however, is usually the "authority" who at the same time has the power to define law and order. Accordingly, resistance is outside the set order.
background and demarcation
Resistance as a form of social and political debate has been anchored in European political culture since ancient times. In almost all forms of society there was or is a consensus that resistance can be necessary and legitimate in certain cases. In specific cases, opinions sometimes differ.
Resistance must be distinguished from revolution because it is not fundamentally aimed at reforming the social order. In certain circumstances, the restoration of an old law or a legal system that has been repealed can be the central concern. Nevertheless, a movement that started as a resistance can lead to a revolution...

Revolution
A revolution is a fundamental and lasting structural change in one or more systems, which usually takes place abruptly or in a relatively short time. It can be peaceful or violent. There are revolutions in the most diverse areas of social and cultural life. The terms evolution and reform are antonyms: they stand for slower developments or for changes without radical change. The exact definition is disputed, there is no generally valid theory of revolution about the necessary and sufficient conditions for the emergence of each revolution, the phases of its course and its short-term and long-term consequences. A participant in a revolution is called a revolutionary...
