Flamanville

7 activists arrested after protest at Flamanville nuclear reactor

In France, Greenpeace activists have entered the EPR reactor under construction in Flamanville to protest pro-nuclear candidates in the French presidential election.
Seven Greenpeace activists were arrested during the action. They had hung a banner reading "Nuclear power: Macron irresponsible" near the reactor under construction.
The construction of the new nuclear power plant in Normandy began at the end of 2007 and should have been connected to the grid long ago. Completion is 11 years overdue. According to the French electricity company EDF, the costs now amount to 12,7 billion euros. Originally, 3,3 billion euros had been estimated for the construction.
Greenpeace France has called for an independent assessment of the viability of so-called EPR nuclear reactors.

Return of the solar industry?

"Without China, the energy transition would have died"

In the 2000s, Germany was the Mecca of the solar industry. 20 years later, the majority of the industry is in China, and Germany's energy supply depends on the goodwill of the Russian president. Volker Quaschning blames the German metal industry, among others. Because of you, the then federal government practically wound up the solar industry between 2012 and 2015, explains the professor for regenerative energy systems from the HTW Berlin in the "climate laboratory" of ntv. "That's the fatal thing," he says. Germany gave the world cheap solar energy, but dropped out of it at that very moment. Is a comeback conceivable? And useful? ...

War on climate and ecology

The war in Ukraine has arrived in European Union agriculture. In view of the lack of grain on the world market, which Ukraine and Russia have so far served to a large extent, the European Commission is repealing part of its own organic rules: It releases four million hectares of ecological focus areas for cultivation, including the use of chemicals. In doing so, the commission is following the lobby of the agricultural industry, which is leading the war against the climate crisis and the biodiversity crisis.

WE WILL ALL DIE:

Climate catastrophe already due to regional nuclear war?

How many atomic bombs cause a nuclear winter? This question is not only topical in view of smaller nuclear powers and tactical nuclear weapons, but also interesting from a climatological point of view. Such events depend on the behavior of the aerosols - and they are difficult to model.

... The big question now is whether already limited nuclear conflicts with a few dozen to a hundred or so warheads can cause a catastrophic nuclear winter ...

IMHO

... climatologically interesting ... behavior of the aerosols ...

What is raised here as a big question would certainly also be relevant for Dr. Strange very interesting.

Should the looming Climate catastrophe once again be exploited to create even more and even more extensive Atomic research to justify?

It sounds as if a single small atomic bomb wouldn't be so bad after all. This is 100% wrong and an insanely dangerous debate, this "we can theorize about it" opens the door to the use of nuclear weapons. Because everything that is researched must also be tested. Mankind has over 2000 atomic bomb tests worldwide to thank for this logic. Thank you! But no thanks.

"With a well-aimed nuclear bomb, an otherwise potentially long-lasting conflict could be ended very quickly" or "Uranium ammunition, why not? It works, doesn't it?" or, or, or. Humanity has walked this crazy path before and decided not to go any further, and that was a good thing. Because a first small bomb here, a second small bomb there, and in no time Pandora's box can no longer be sealed.

Nuclear weapons should be abolished and every horror clowndisguised as a politician who tries to get his hands on the power of the bomb must be outlawed. How we can achieve this is worth thinking about and researching.

Putin's Ukraine War as a Catalyst for the Energy Transition?

The war against Ukraine also shows why the fixation on "economy, economy, economy" is extremely dangerous in terms of climate and security policy. A look into the past makes it clear what consequences disruptive developments and external shocks can have for climate and energy policy. Part 1 of the guest post.

Many ecologically motivated people are wondering these days whether Putin's war of aggression against Ukraine, which violates international law, will accelerate or slow down climate protection and the energy transition. Both developments are conceivable.

March 28, 1979 - (INES 5 - NAMS 7,9) - Three Mile Island NPP

3,7 Millions of Tbq of radioactivity were released

The failure of machine parts and measuring signals as well as operating errors by the crew led to the failure of the reactor cooling system, which led to a partial core meltdown.

According to the data from the NAMS list, this accident was the reactor accident with the second largest release of radioactivity worldwide, only the Chernobyl meltdown in 1986 5,2 Millions of Tbq brought even more poison into the world.

economy of attention - 1 | 2

Damn long time ago …

Forty-three years is a long time, things can slip through the sieve.

43 years ago there was a nuclear accident at the local nuclear power plant in Harrisburg Three mile island. Harrisburg is the capital of the US state of Pennsylvania and is located 170 miles west of New York and 120 miles north of Washington, the US capital.

On 28. March 1979 there was a partial core meltdown in reactor block 2, in which, according to the figures in the NAMS 3.7 million terabecquerels (Tbq) radioactivity were released. This most serious incident in a commercial nuclear power plant in the United States of America was irritatingly only classified in category INES 5.

That was 7 years before that Super disaster from Chernobyl who as Category INES 7 was classified and at which 5,2 million terabecquerels (Tbq) got into the environment. Almost everyone can remember this accident in Ukraine, even if Chernobyl happened before they were born.

The reason why people cannot remember the accident in the USA is that, for example, even authors of the German-language Wikipedia forget here and there to mention this second most serious nuclear accident in the world.

At the super meltdown category INES 7 in Fukushima "only" 1.59 million terabecquerels (Tbq) released radioactivity.

Why did Harrisburg with 3.7 million Tbq end up in category INES 5, while Fukushima, with 1.59 million Tbq was classified as INES 7

It sounds really strange, like "The world is looking for the super meltdown".

Winner, the USSR, which earned first prize for the most terrible meltdown. The second winner is Japan for the most attractive meltdown of all time. The USA with a rather below-average performance was hardly mentioned under further follow-up ...

But that's exactly the point; in Fukushima there was something to see, first the tsunami and unspeakable human suffering, then the explosions of the 3 reactors on three different days, fear and drama until fainting, TV cameras love that! This is prime eye fodder for our "dear viewers out there at the screens".

In Harrisburg, all that could be seen were the helplessly dumb faces of the so-called people in charge and perhaps also the panic among the population, for which, however, there was no really discernible reason. Reactor 2 had simply given up, let out its last sigh, blown the invisible highly toxic dust into the air and let the contaminated cooling water run into the Susquehanna River.

No boom and no lurid pictures, that's not sexy!

And so the PR fuzzies of the nuclear industry had an easy time keeping this incident out of the media.

The mother of all Nuclear lobbyists, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), created the International Nuclear Event Scale (INES) , an instrument that prevents any clarity and transparency for the comparability of nuclear accidents from the outset.

To be continued ...

A Month of War in Ukraine: Developing a Tragedy

Ukraine has suffered terrible casualties in the first month of the Russian invasion. Nevertheless, with each passing day of the war, Ukrainians believe that some kind of victory is possible for them

On February 24, just before dawn in Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered the latest in a series of televised addresses. His tirades about Ukraine had become increasingly menacing. Now came the preliminary highlight: the announcement of a "special military operation", as the Russian President euphemistically called it. The aim is the "demilitarization and denazification" of Ukraine ...

ENMOD convention

The ENMOD Convention, English Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification Techniques (German: Environmental War Convention), is an international treaty drawn up by the United Nations Disarmament Commission prohibiting military or other hostile use of environmental modification techniques Techniques. The convention prohibits the contracting parties from targeted military interventions in natural processes of the environment, but also from using influences of the natural environment as a weapon in a war or armed conflict. The Convention linked international environmental law and international humanitarian law.

Historical Information

Shortly after the end of the Vietnam War with its environmental consequences, the topic of environmental warfare was put on the agenda of the United Nations by the then Soviet Union in 1974. This led to the drafting of the Convention, which was adopted by the UN General Assembly as Resolution 31/72 on December 10, 1976. From May 18, 1977 to October 5, 1978, 47 states signed the convention, which then came into force on October 5, 1978 for the signatory states.

Protection of the natural environment from the effects of hostilities was reaffirmed in 1977 by the First Additional Protocol to the Geneva Conventions. This agreement also extended the concept of the environment to include the social and built environment. Accordingly, human infrastructure, cultural landscapes and human living space are also considered to be an environment worthy of protection. Moreover, the Additional Protocol prohibits attacks against the natural environment as retaliation...
