United Nuclear Corporation, Wood River Junction
On July 24, 1964, a fatal criticality accident occurred at the United Nuclear Corporation's Wood River Junction nuclear facility. This plant was designed for the recovery of highly enriched uranium from waste from fuel element production. Technician Robert Peabody worked with a tank containing radioactive uranium-235 in a sodium carbonate solution stirred with a stirrer. Intending to add a bottle of trichloroethane to remove organics, he accidentally added a bottle of uranium solution to the tank, resulting in a criticality excursion (runaway chain reaction) which is accompanied by a flash of light and the squirting out of about 20% of the tank's contents (approx 10 liters from 40 to 50 liters including the contents of the bottle).
This criticality exposed the 37-year-old Peabody to a lethal radiation dose of "more than 700 rem," equivalent to 7 Sv. He died 49 hours after the incident...

FDP rejects Porschegate allegations
The FDP has rejected the allegation that party leader Christian Lindner was in close contact with the boss of the car manufacturer Porsche on the issue of dealing with synthetic fuels. Lindner's position on so-called e-fuels has been "known for years" and dates back to the FDP's time in opposition, a party spokesman said on Saturday. Porsche explained: "During an internal event in June, the wording was exaggerated, for which we apologize." There was no influence.

2008 uranium accident
On July 8, 2008, an alarm was raised in the Tricastin area. In a plant for the treatment of uranium solutions on the nuclear power plant site, 30 cubic meters (= 30.000 liters) uranium-containing liquid leaked from a leaking retention basin during cleaning. "Part of it got into the two rivers Gaffière and Lauzon, the nuclear regulatory authority said. In one of the two, a uranium concentration was measured around a thousand times above the normal value, but then, according to the information, quickly dropped again." Water extraction and fishing were prohibited. The environmental protection movement Sortir du Nucléaire dismissed the regulator's claim that there was little risk as downplaying it. "Anyone who drinks contaminated water has the particles in their body. Even with low levels of radiation, there is a considerable risk of cancer."
On July 11, three days later, the nuclear supervisory authority prohibited further operation of the plant because the safety measures were insufficient. Suddenly it was said that 224 kilograms of uranium had leaked and 74 kilograms of it had gotten into the water.
The classification of the accident as an INES level 1 incident was doubted by Sortir du Nucléaire because radioactivity was released. "If you take the information from the authorities as a basis, the incident should at least be classified as a "serious incident" at level 3, if not as an "accident" at level 4" ...

Repository | Anti-nuclear bike ride
Gorleben's legacy
The longest anti-nuclear demonstration of all time is to celebrate the end of nuclear power. The action is overshadowed by the debate about extended nuclear power plant runtimes
Who knows Taaken? The village is a district of the municipality of Reeßum in the joint municipality of Sottrum in the district of Rotenburg (Wümme), i.e. in the middle of Lower Saxony. It has a couple of beautiful half-timbered farms, almost 400 inhabitants, a kindergarten and a fire station. That Taaken is largely unknown could soon change. In its interim report from September 2020, the Federal Agency for EndRepository (BGE) lists seven areas in the district of Rotenburg as possible locations for a nuclear waste repository, including the approximately 85 square kilometer underground salt dome Taaken/Scheeßel/Ostervesede. Local environmentalists fear the salt dome could make the shortlist, despite evidence of earthquakes in the area due to natural gas extraction.
That is why activists from Taaken co-founded the citizens' initiative "No repository in the district of Rotenburg". And that's why Taaken was the stage destination on Thursday of this week on the first of two anti-nuclear bike tours, each lasting several weeks, which will lead through Germany and several neighboring countries this summer. Organized "broadcast" by the anti-nuclear organization, the longest - in terms of duration - demonstration against nuclear power started on July 9 with dozens of cyclists at the Belgian nuclear power plant in Tihange ...

Noam Chomsky says in the Telepolis interview: Capitalism is the engine of the global crisis drama. The "lords of mankind" are laying waste to the planet. How do we escape the corporate-politics-media-super-rich complex? (Part 1)
In the Telepolis interview with David Goeßmann, US dissident Noam Chomsky, one of the most frequently quoted intellectuals, explains why capitalism with neoliberal security will lead to its downfall. The "lords of mankind" who control the economy are architects of a policy that guarantees enormous profits for the powerful, but brings wars, economic decline, inequality and climate collapse to the world. Chomsky shows how to stop the upward redistribution and bring the fossil fuel industry under control.
It is more than an outrage that we have to bribe the powerful, the "masters of humanity" who are responsible for the crises, to stop destroying the planet.

Solar power: Feed-in tariff increases again
Self-consumption of electrical energy from your own roof is becoming more lucrative again due to the new rules of the EEG 2023 - all details here in the article.
With the EEG 2023, the federal government has launched an amendment to the Renewable Energy Sources Act. Cabinet, Bundestag and Bundesrat have agreed - and the law will shortly become final. It contains higher feed-in tariffs for solar power, which is considered state aid and must be approved by the European Union. Nuclear power plant "stretching operation":
The methadone of energy policy
Opinion Even the Greens are now open to extending the lifetime of nuclear power plants beyond the end of the year
While there is a strange juxtaposition of airport chaos, drought, hunger, war and burning forests in the German news, the federal government is organizing Turkish security personnel. So that a knife in hand luggage is not overlooked - everything has to be safe. Better back to nuclear power then!
Atomic thinking rears its creepy head like a zombie. Has eaten away at the brains and at the same time pretends to be able to think rationally. And then produces such grandiose ideas as nuclear power plant “stretching operation”. The main thing is that everything goes on as before. Higher faster further. Well then, again: with nuclear power. Climate crisis - there is no after
This week's heatwave is another sign of climate change. More and more hot days. This must have consequences for architecture and urban planning. A comment.
The bureaucratic hurdles involved in expanding solar systems and wind turbines are still far too high. The bogus debate about longer operating times for the three remaining nuclear power plants in Germany is much more important to liberal and conservative politicians. Virtually nothing works in climate protection without lawyers. Bioenergy is completely neglected and the expansion of geothermal energy is completely overslept.

In November 2001, a study on the possible toxic effects of the reprocessing plants in La Hague (France) and Sellafield was published by the European Parliament, written by WISE/Paris under the direction of Mycle Schneider. Their conclusion was that up to this point in time both sites had the highest human-caused release of radioactivity, comparable to a major nuclear accident every year. The release of radioactive substances was possibly twice that after the Chernobyl disaster. A significant increase in leukemia cases was observed in the vicinity of both sites; it is considered possible that the radioactive emissions from both plants contributed to this. Significant concentrations of radionuclides in food, sediment, flora and fauna have been detected at Sellafield. Carbon-14, caesium-137, cobalt-60, iodine-129, plutonium, strontium-90, technetium-99 were found, the latter with a half-life of 214.000 years...

While Western Europe is literally on fire, the traffic light government is failing with its climate package. The FDP is the problem.
The traffic light government is being caught up by its birth defect: a green government profile is difficult to sustain with the FDP. Of course, the SPD has had its moments, too, taking action against the necessary climate protection to save coal jobs. Climate catastrophe
is the term for climate change with worldwide catastrophic effects. This also includes uncontrolled global warming, for example as a greenhouse-earth scenario. In the mass media in particular, the term is often used as a framework for interpreting the feared consequences of man-made climate change. Sometimes, even in climate impact research, drastic consequences are referred to as climate catastrophes. Climate catastrophes serve as motifs in literature and film. If left unsolved, the current political, social and technological climate crisis would result in a climate catastrophe...

resistance (politics)
Resistance is the refusal to obey or active opposition to the authorities or the government.
It is initially of secondary importance whether the rulers against whom resistance is being exercised exercise their rule legally, legitimately or illegally. Evaluations such as "justified resistance", goals and means of resistance, moral and legal concerns require an observer's point of view: it depends on who, where and at what time the evaluation is made. The resister will always evaluate the resistance differently than the one against whom the resistance is directed. The latter, however, is usually the "authority" who at the same time has the power to define law and order. Accordingly, resistance is outside the set order.
background and demarcation
Resistance as a form of social and political debate has been anchored in European political culture since ancient times. In almost all forms of society there was or is a consensus that resistance can be necessary and legitimate in certain cases. In specific cases, opinions sometimes differ.
Resistance must be distinguished from revolution because it is not fundamentally aimed at reforming the social order. In certain circumstances, the restoration of an old law or a legal system that has been repealed can be the central concern. Nevertheless, a movement that started as a resistance can lead to a revolution...
