Nuclear Power Accidents

This PDF file contains an almost complete list of known accidents and releases of radioactivity. As new information becomes available, this PDF will be expanded and updated...

Excerpt from the PDF file for this month:

*

In October there are three years of incidents in Sellafield alone / Great Britain, as well as one incident in each USAin Jugoslawien, France and Pakistan

01 October 1981 (INES 3 - NAMS 1,3) one of 15 'INES 3' accidents occurred in Sellafield, during this event 0,9 TBq radiation was released.

05 October 1966 (INES 4) the "fast breeder" in the Akw Enrico Fermi overheated ...

07. to 12. October 1957 (INES 5 - NAMS 4,6) the 'INES 5' accident in Windscale / Sellafield, in which 1786 TBq radiation were released.

12 October 1969 (INES 4) one of 5 'INES 4' incidents in Sellafield, in this event 1,8 TBq radiation was released.

15 October 1958 "Vinča" Institute for Nuclear Sciences near Belgrade, during an experiment 6 researchers were irradiated, one died ...

17 October 1969 (INES 4) Akw Saint-Laurent, more than 50 kilograms of uranium fuel began to melt ...

October 19, 2011 (INES 1) Akw Karachi in Pakistan, I have not yet included this 'INES 1' fault in the "INES and the list of incidents" page, as I have no information about this incident.

October 21, 2021 - Dear friends,

Many of you will feel the same way as we do: We are not very satisfied with the climate policy agreements in the exploratory paper of the future traffic light coalitionists - many fine words, but so far not very specific and binding provisions PRO climate protection - it is definitely not enough to achieve the Paris climate goals and the atomic realm is still completely absent. Unfortunately, there is still a lot to do and the handwriting of the FDP and parts of the SPD that slows down can already be clearly seen.

That is why the following applies to us: Don't sit still and wait, but intervene where possible:

1.) Climate strike October 22nd
We are calling for participation in the next Fridays climate strike, now on Friday, October 22 in the center of Berlin, but also e.g. B. at 15 p.m. at the main station in Münster or in Gronau at 16 p.m. at the Café Extrablatt in the pedestrian zone. Find out what's going on in your area.
https://fridaysforfuture.de/

2.) Assembly Law Demo Cologne October 30th
And then we still have a real black and yellow state government in North Rhine-Westphalia that still wants to push through a sharp, repressive assembly law.
On the other hand, on Saturday, October 30th in Cologne (13 p.m. from Friesenplatz) the third large nationwide demo will take place - of course we also call for this - freedom of demonstration is like air to breathe for an emancipated society!
https://www.nrw-versammlungsgesetz-stoppen.de/

3.) Demo Lützerath October 31 - Stop coal mining immediately!
The same NRW state government continues to support RWE with the demolition of the villages at the Garzweiler opencast mine. The fight for Lützerath is currently going on. There are regular protests, including village walks every Sunday.

On Sunday, October 31st, it will turn into a big demo - we are calling for this. The meeting point is at 11.30 a.m. in Lützerath:
https://www.alle-doerfer-bleiben.de/

4.) Petition on radioactively contaminated metals
Due to the decommissioning and the beginning of the demolition of the nuclear power plant, more and more radioactively contaminated materials are being produced. A petition from BaWü is now calling for an export ban and an end to the melting of radioactively contaminated metals from the Bundestag and the federal government. The dangers here have so far been carelessly underestimated and belittled. So please support the important petition - thank you:
https://weact.campact.de/petitions/stopp-des-exports-und-des-einschmelzens-radioaktiv-kontaminierter-metalle

5.) Thinking outside the box:
a) French President Macron wants to massively expand atomic energy in France, with six large reactors and many smaller ones - absolute madness, which is also related to the fact that a "civil" nuclear industry is imperative to preserve French nuclear weapons.
At the same time, Greenpeace France has revealed that France is currently shipping a large amount of reprocessed uranium to Russia. Greenpeace and Ecodefense are protesting against it!
b) Urenco is not idle either - according to our information, new uranium waste transports are currently taking place from the British UAA Capenhurst near Liverpool to Russia. Also with the Mikhail Dudin and also via the port of Ust-Luga near St. Petersburg. Urenco can't help it - and the federal government is silent.
c) We expect that Urenco hopes to be able to bring uranium waste to Russia from Gronau after the NRW state elections next May - we absolutely want to prevent that. These uranium waste exports must finally come to an end.

So there is a lot to do - let's go!

Extract from an interview by Jacobin Magazine with Noam Chomsky

(Part 1)

«US imperialism will hardly change»

(Part 2)

"Instead of terrorizing, start a humanitarian program"

Noam Chomsky: Is the US now drawing the consequences from its expensive, murderous, but unsuccessful foreign policy?

Jacobin: We wonder if there are any humanitarian projects that you think should be supported by progressives — aside from ending sanctions on various countries and taking in more refugees — projects that don't fall into the trap of continuing the interventions .

Noam Chomsky: Take George W. Bush, who was responsible for the invasion of Afghanistan and later invasion of Iraq - millions of people were killed, countries destroyed, the whole region devastated by ethnic conflicts that did not exist before.

We could start a humanitarian program now, for example by providing vaccines for Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa and Asia...

Nuclear weapons worldwide

Inventory of nuclear warheads

According to the Federation of American Scientists (FAS), nine states currently have nuclear weapons.

The global inventory of nuclear warheads, which peaked at 1986 in 70.300, is currently estimated at a total of 13.100. Of these, around 9.600 are in military stocks, the rest is to be dismantled (as of May 2021).

Uranium and plutonium

Uranium and plutonium are needed to manufacture nuclear weapons. Both substances were already in military use before they were used for power generation and isotope production. Weapons-grade uranium must be highly enriched and contain at least 90% of the isotope uranium-235. Plutonium that can be used in weapons must consist of more than 90% plutonium-239 and is produced in special reactors in which natural uranium is used.

The global stocks of highly enriched uranium in 2017 were estimated at 1.340 tons, those for separated plutonium at 230 tons (military stocks) and 290 tons (civil stocks) ...

Nuclear energy by country

30 countries worldwide currently operate 441 nuclear reactors with a total net electrical output of around 390 gigawatts (as of June 27, 2020).

History

The civil use of nuclear energy in nuclear power plants began in the mid-1950s. After the Second World War, the use of nuclear energy was highly controversial in society and was associated with the atomic bombs being dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. US President Dwight D. Eisenhower outlined his vision of a peaceful use of nuclear energy in the Atoms for Peace speech to the United Nations in 1953. The first commercial nuclear power plants were the Magnox reactors of the Calder Hall nuclear power plant in 1956 and the pressurized water reactor at Shippingport nuclear power plant in 1957, which was borrowed from the submarine reactors and has shaped the future of the peaceful use of nuclear energy to this day ...
