Nuclear weapons

October 06th, 2021 - Nuclear weapons ban in the coalition agreement!

Open letter to negotiators

In an open letter to the members of the newly elected Bundestag, representatives of German ICAN partners and friendly organizations called for a contemporary and cooperative security policy as well as nuclear disarmament under the Nuclear Weapons Prohibition Treaty (AVV) - both must become an integral part of the coalition agreement. The election result should generally be understood as a mandate to modernize.

“The previous federal government boycotted the UN treaty banning nuclear weapons. With the formation of a new government, there is now an opportunity to change that. In surveys, a majority of Germans are already in favor of comprehensive nuclear disarmament. The outcome of the election is a clear mandate for the new federal government to take part as an observer in the Conference of the Parties to the AVV in March next year and to join the UN treaty, ”emphasizes Dr. med. Lars Pohlmeier, Co-Chairman of the German Section of International Doctors for the Prevention of Nuclear War ...

Uranium transport

Federal police confirm:

October 06, 2021 - Uranium transports Gronau-Russia were "nuclear waste" - criminal complaint against Urenco

In several letters to opponents of nuclear power, the Federal Police expressly confirmed for the first time that the exports of depleted uranium from the Gronau uranium enrichment plant to Russia were nuclear waste. The letter from the St. Augustin Federal Police Directorate sent at the end of September with reference to the uranium transports of November 18, 2019 and October 5, 2020 literally states: "(...) as part of a rail transport of nuclear waste (organized by the Urenco company) (...) ". Until now, Urenco had always spoken of “recyclable material” because the export of radioactive waste is prohibited under Section 328 of the German Criminal Code.

Due to the new situation, an opponent of nuclear power from the Münsterland has now filed a criminal complaint against the Urenco company with the Münster public prosecutor's office for the “illegal export of radioactive materials”.

“For 15 years the uranium enrichment company Urenco upheld the claim that the uranium waste shipments from Gronau to Russia were“ valuable materials ”shipments. However, according to the findings of the Russian environmental organizations Ecodefense and Greenpeace Russia, uranium waste is stored in Russia without any further recycling in open spaces under the open sky. This is a flawless nuclear waste export. We are very pleased that the Federal Police have now officially confirmed this and we expect the Münster Public Prosecutor's Office to conduct detailed and targeted investigations, "said Peter Bastian from the Münsterland Action Alliance against Nuclear Plants ...

Dear friends,

the likely decisive argument about the future of Lützerath and the further coal mining in Garzweiler has begun: yesterday activists occupied a coal excavator and several of them are still in custody. That's why there are solos. From now on there is Every Sunday in October there are long walks in the village in Lützerath from 11.30 a.m. as well as other large and small protests to prevent the site from being demolished. Because the clearing season started yesterday and RWE wants to create facts before something else is decided in Berlin.

But the 1,5 ° limit runs BEFORE Lützerath - we show solidarity and call for participation in the protests.

Ecodefense / Alternative Nobel Prize:

Our friend Vladimir Slivyak and Ecodefense have not only fought against nuclear projects in recent years, but have also played a leading role in organizing the fight against coal mining in Russia. That is why the Alternative Nobel Prize was rightly awarded to him. Here are two large reports in taz and Deutsche Welle on the work of Ecodefense and the extremely critical situation of the environmental movement in Russia:

https://taz.de/Alternativer-Nobelpreis-fuer-Aktivisten/!5804898/

https://www.dw.com/de/russischer-umweltaktivist-erh%C3%A4lt-right-livelihood-award/a-59339087

In future, Vladimir is sure to be happy about invitations for lectures etc. - a lot is now possible again Corona-wise. And that benefits international networking and solidarity.

Coalition Poker Berlin:

The current coalition talks offer the possibility of stopping further imports of Russian coal, of finally banning uranium waste exports from Gronau to Russia and of overturning the planned fuel element cooperation in Lingen between Framatome and Russia.

And so to the last topic: We fear (certainly not the only ones) that many climate issues will come under the wheels at the traffic light talks in Berlin in order to keep the FDP (and also the SPD) on board. This applies to the coal phase-out and the speed limit, but certainly also to the shutdown of UAA Gronau and fuel element factory Lingen, for uranium and fuel element exports all over the world, for uranium centrifuge research in Jülich, for the highly enriched reactor operation in Munich-Garching or for the abandonment of the completely unsuccessful Konrad repository project.

Therefore: We should all get involved with our contacts and opportunities in Berlin over the next few weeks. The nuclear and coal phase-out is and will remain manual work - nothing works without our pressure from the streets!

So let's not watch from the sidelines, but get involved and put pressure on !!

... With exponential price developments, there is always a bit of panic and speculation on the stock exchange, which at a certain point can no longer be explained rationally.

Emsland Lingen

September 30, 2021 - Rust and cracks in the Lingen nuclear power plant

Alliance AgiEL and BUND Lower Saxony demand immediate shutdown and safety check

The Emsland nuclear power plant in Lingen has dangerous cracks in the steam generator heating pipes, which can be traced back to corrosion processes. The federal government admitted this in response to a request from the left (printed paper 19/31989). They are equivalent to the damage to the Neckarwestheim 2 nuclear power plant. Despite this damage, the operator, RWE Power AG, did not carry out a corresponding test of the heating pipes in the nuclear power plant in the 2021 revision. This exposes people and the environment to a considerable risk. In addition, the nuclear supervisory authority disregards its own safety requirements ...

September 30, 2021 - IPPNW highlights health implications of uranium mining

Alliance statement on EU taxonomy

The European Alliance for the Self-Determination of Indigenous PeopleS made a statement on Tuesday to draw attention to the consequences of uranium mining on the territory of indigenous peoples. The statement is addressed to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, as well as to the President and the members of the EU Parliament, who should decide by the end of the year whether nuclear energy is classified as a "sustainable" investment and included in the EU taxonomy . As a co-signatory, the International Medical Organization for the Prevention of Nuclear War underscores the catastrophic health consequences of uranium mining, especially for the indigenous population.

"In many regions of the world where uranium is mined for use in the EU, mining is endangering the health of miners and the local population," explains IPPNW Co-Chair Dr. med. Angelika Claussen. Both conventional uranium mining and so-called in-situ leaching are extremely harmful. In Niger, studies in 2004/2005 confirmed the radioactive contamination of drinking water and breathing air beyond the WHO limit values ...

Germany's militarization: not an issue on election night

On the evening of the Bundestag elections, the German television stations consistently ignored the topic of foreign policy. An accident?

Who wasn't sitting in front of the television last Sunday evening in Germany? After all, everyone wanted to hear what the representatives of the major political parties had to say about the ongoing projections of the election results. And the various moderators and questioners also showed that they were aware of many differences between the parties and knew how to elicit corresponding opinions and forecasts.

What was astonishing, however, was that one topic was not a topic throughout the evening: foreign policy. There was no question to the top politicians as to whether it makes sense and whether it is right in their eyes to send the German frigate 'Bayern' to the Pacific Ocean. There was no question to the top politicians as to whether, after the debacle in Afghanistan, military ties with the USA and NATO still make sense and are right for them. And there was no question as to whether the extremely anti-Russian resolution of the EU Parliament last week, which even called for the EU's foreign policy to be determined exclusively in Brussels, was good, acceptable or perhaps rather problematic . The subject of Germany's foreign policy was left out, not a word was heard about it...
