Fukushima:

How critical are the reactor cores?

A cautious sigh of relief: Researchers have gained important information about the reactor cores in the Fukushima nuclear power plant. Accordingly, the highly radioactive fuel melt probably still contains enough neutron-absorbing boron to prevent an atomic chain reaction. Because in the fallout of the nuclear catastrophe there are only small boron residues, as measurements have shown for the first time. This knowledge is crucial if the reactor cores are to be disposed of.

Nuclear Weapons Prohibition Treaty

content of the contract

What does the GCU prohibit?

The AVV prohibits states from developing, testing, producing and possessing nuclear weapons. In addition, disclosure, storage, use and threats are prohibited. In addition, the contract prohibits support for such activities. Furthermore, states are prohibited from stationing nuclear weapons on their own soil...

*

meaning of the contract

Will the treaty affect the nuclear weapons debate?

Yes - because the debate on nuclear disarmament came to a standstill after the Cold War. In recent years, the public focus has primarily been on the challenges of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons (Iran, North Korea). Nuclear weapons are stylized as symbols of power and strength. The new treaty and the movement behind it calls that into question. From the point of view of the overwhelming majority of states, nuclear weapons are simply unacceptable, an incalculable risk for their populations. Almost all states have permanently renounced nuclear weapons. In a multipolar world of asymmetric warfare, non-state actors, cyber and drone wars, this adherence to nuclear weapons is not "realistic" but highly dangerous. The belief that we can bet on long-term nuclear deterrence, keeping thousands of nuclear weapons operational 24 hours a day without ever being used, is naïve at best.

Those states that do not rely on nuclear deterrence have codified their position on nuclear weapons under international law for the first time with the AVV. On that basis, they can assert with greater unity and vehemence their right to no longer be exposed to the risks posed by nuclear weapons...

Nuclear Weapons Prohibition Treaty

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) is an international agreement that prohibits the development, production, testing, acquisition, stockpiling, transport, deployment and use of nuclear weapons, as well as the threat to do so. On January 22, 2021, 90 days after the 50th ratification, the treaty came into force.

In December 2016, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution mandated to negotiate such a treaty. The first round of negotiations took place in New York in March 2017, the second in July 2017. 132 of the 124 member states took part in the first conference and 193 in the second, including Austria as a co-initiator. The drafted treaty was approved on July 7, 2017 by 122 votes; the Netherlands voted against, Singapore abstained. At the UN General Assembly in September 2017, 53 countries initially signed. As of October 8, 2021, 86 states had signed and 56 states had ratified the treaty.

The official and de facto nuclear powers and the NATO countries, with the exception of the Netherlands, did not take part in the negotiations and did not subsequently sign the treaty. Iran and Saudi Arabia took part in the negotiations as the only countries suspected of attempting to build or have nuclear weapons at their disposal, but they did not sign the treaty either...
