 IMHO

The nuclear lobby always says that nuclear power plants protect against blackouts. France operates 56 nuclear power plants and summer or winter there are plenty of problems, either too hot or too cold for these overly complex nuclear powered steam engines.

NRW

Dear friends,

As every year, authorities, corporations and ministries try to let important decisions go under during the Christmas season. That is why there is still a lot of important news to report just before Christmas. We don't want to withhold that from you.

First of all, we wish you all relaxed holidays and a nuclear-free and climate-active year 2022! At the same time, we would like to thank you for many joint activities as well as for your solidarity and support - only together will we advance the nuclear phase-out and stop climate change with great determination. We would like to continue working on this with you in 2022!

1. EU greenwashing of nuclear power and gas postponed

Probably also under pressure from the new federal government, the EU Commission postponed its decision to include nuclear and gas as "green" energies in the new taxonomy. Now there should be a "compromise" by mid-January. So nothing has been won yet, but the pressure from civil society is also working against the EU nuclear lobbyists who want the money pots for renewable energies!

2. Nuclear power stations on and off

Bad news today from Finland, where the scandalous reactor Olkiluoto 3 became "critical" for the first time - with a 12 year delay, numerous breakdowns and complaints between the manufacturers Areva and Siemens, construction costs quadrupled - and fuel elements from Lingen! What madness!

But things are not looking rosy elsewhere for the nuclear lobby: in France several reactors had to be taken off the grid due to technical problems, in the UK three nuclear power plants were shut down prematurely this year alone and here in Germany Brokdorf, Grohnde and Gundremmingen C will finally go offline at the end of the year. So the trend is clearly going against nuclear energy.

In Neckarwestheim and Lingen, however, the nuclear power plants are to remain on the grid for a year longer despite cracks found - a completely incalculable risk!

3. Gronau reactor research

has broadcast a longer report on the recently made known reactor research in Gronau and the supposedly hip "small" reactors: https://www.ausgestrahlt.de/blog/2021/12/21/mikro-meiler-made-in-germany/

Nuclear phase-out in Germany? Definitely not in Gronau for Urenco!

4. Suspension decision of the OVG Münster zu Lützi

Due to illness and the complexity of the proceedings, the OVG Münster postponed its urgent decision on Lützerath that was announced for the beginning of January and ordered RWE not to carry out any clearings or clearings on the property of Bauer Heukamp until the verdict. So Lützi is still alive - and on 8.1. there is (so far) still the announced big demo!

5. Supervision complaint against Borken district administrator

In Gronau a year ago, a Urenco employee drove his car to a memorial vigil for opponents of nuclear power. This led to several criminal charges - not against the aggressive driver, but against those attending the meeting!
Now there is a new supervisory complaint against the head of the responsible Borken district police, the Borken district administrator.

You can find the whole hair-raising story on our website: www.sofa-ms.de

6. Uranium transport protests with consequences

For May 2022, the Steinfurt District Court terminated a process in connection with the blockade of a uranium train near Gronau in autumn 2017 - more information on this in the new year.

At the same time, the federal police sent hearing sheets to several opponents of nuclear power in order to claim around 30 euros in "operational costs" in connection with two climbing campaigns against the transport of uranium waste from Gronau to Russia in 000 and 2019. Spicy: In September the Federal Police asked for another 2020 euros - that is, quite a blatant rate of inflation!

And in September, the federal police spoke of trains with "radioactive waste" that had been arranged by Urenco. This passage has now been deleted, namely in October it led to a criminal complaint against Urenco on suspicion of illegal export of radioactive substances. The public prosecutor's office in Münster must now investigate ... More on that in the new year.

With this in mind: stay active, get involved, take a deep breath and stay healthy - the new year will continue!

Blackout | Energy transition

Blackout-safe with green electricity: Is Germany armed against dark doldrums?

Will the coming energy transition endanger our electricity security in Germany? Experts currently see no danger and give reasons for it. However, the prerequisite is an expansion of the network structure in order to be able to meet the upcoming requirements of energy supply and distribution.

Energy is one of the mainstays of our economy and quite literally the driving force behind our civilization today. After the end of coal and nuclear power plants, many fear that there could be a significant gap in the supply of electricity and thus a dreaded "blackout", reports Focus online. After all, there are decisive differences in the case of renewable energies, which then represent the central technologies for generating electricity. Energy from the wind can only flow when it is blowing and PV modules only supply energy when the sun is shining...

The energy transition

The realignment of energy policy and economy in Germany, with which for the first time a large industrial state is converting its fossil-nuclear energy generation to renewable, is being closely monitored internationally. As a "laboratory of the future" and an innovative pioneering achievement, it has also been compared with the US lunar mission.

The aim of the energy transition is a sustainable, decentralized energy supply, which is to be achieved with a combination of renewable energies, intelligent energy storage, energy saving and increased efficiency. The success of the German energy transition would prove that energy supply and prosperity are possible even without conventional energy sources.

Nuclear phase-out in Germany

Moratorium and exit decision

In spring 2011 the last decade of the use of atomic energy was heralded in Germany. After Chancellor Angela Merkel had agreed an extension of the service life of German nuclear power plants with the energy companies on September 5, 2010, the Fukushima disaster of March 11, 2011 led to a U-turn in energy policy.

On March 14th, the federal government decided on a moratorium for three months. Seven older reactors, which were supposed to be subjected to a "comprehensive safety review", were taken off the grid: Biblis A and B, Brunsbüttel, Isar 1, Neckarwestheim I, Philippsburg I, Unterweser.

Since nuclear power had lost support in the majority of the population and in all political forces, the black and yellow federal government decided on May 30, 2011 to take all nuclear power plants off the grid by 2022. The decision to withdraw and to amend the Atomic Energy Act was formally passed on June 6th by the cabinet and justified by Angela Merkel in the government declaration of June 9th.

On June 30, 2011, the nuclear phase-out was decided by a clear majority in the Bundestag and confirmed by the Bundesrat on July 8, 2011. On August 1, 2011, the law was finally signed by the former Federal President Christian Wulff ...

Wikipedia

Energy transition

is the German-speaking term for the transition from the unsustainable use of fossil fuels and nuclear energy to a sustainable energy supply using renewable energies. The term was culturally received after the book Energiewende - Growth and Prosperity without Petroleum and Uranium by the Öko-Institut published in 1980 and has already been adopted as a loan word in other languages (for example "The German Energiewende" or "A Energiewende alemã").

The aim of the energy transition is to minimize the ecological, social and health problems caused by the conventional energy industry and to fully internalize the external costs that have so far been hardly priced in in the energy market. In view of the largely human-made global warming, the decarbonization of the energy industry is particularly important today - by ending the use of fossil fuels such as crude oil, coal and natural gas. The finiteness of fossil fuels and the dangers of nuclear energy are also important reasons for the energy turnaround. Solving the global energy problem is considered to be the central challenge of the 21st century.

The energy transition encompasses the three sectors of electricity, heat and mobility, as well as the prospect of turning away from fossil raw materials, with their material use in plastics or fertilizer production, for example. A coal and oil phase-out associated with the energy transition must also mean that significant amounts of the available energy sources must remain in the ground. Essential elements of the turnaround are the expansion of renewable energies, combined with the construction of energy storage systems, the increase in energy efficiency and the implementation of energy-saving measures. Renewable energies include bioenergy, geothermal energy, hydropower, ocean energy, solar energy (solar thermal, photovoltaics) and wind energy. Conceptually, the sector coupling plays an important role, in particular the electrification of the heating sector by means of heat pumps and the transport system by means of electromobility ...

Nuclear phase-out

The political decision of a state to discontinue the operation of nuclear power plants and to forego nuclear energy for electricity generation is referred to as nuclear phase-out, also nuclear power phase-out or nuclear waiver. Italy has so far completely phased out the generation of atomic energy, while other countries such as Germany, Belgium and Switzerland have announced or initiated a nuclear phase-out. Austria did not put its completed Zwentendorf nuclear power plant into operation as early as 1978 after a referendum, and other countries canceled some of the nuclear programs that were well advanced.

The nuclear phase-out is an important part of the energy transition; However, this is much broader and provides for the complete conversion to renewable energies as well as the complete abandonment of conventional energy sources (nuclear fuels and fossil fuels) in the long term ...
