Armaments | Corrupt

Armed, corrupt and criminal

European arms companies buy politicians to secure large contracts and delay court cases. Two examples from South Africa and Greece

It's hard to hold powerful people and big corporations accountable for their crimes against the community. One of the best examples of this is probably the lawsuit against South Africa's ex-president Jacob Zuma and the French armaments company Thomson-CSF, which has been called Thales since 2000 and has now been dragging on for decades.

As early as 1999, when he was Vice President under Thabo Mbeki, Zuma is said to have accepted bribes from his financial advisor and creditor Schabir Shaik and in return helped the French arms manufacturer Thomson-CSF to secure a billion-euro arms deal...

STN Atlas Elektronik GmbH and Rheinmetall - export business

From 2013 to 2017, the Bremen public prosecutor's office conducted an investigation against managers of Atlas Elektronik and the armaments company Rheinmetall on suspicion of paying nine million euros in bribes to Greek politicians and officials to stimulate the sale of submarine equipment to Greece. Atlas reported the suspicion himself.

In January 2014, the former Greece representative of Atlas, Panagiotis Efstathiou, testified to the public prosecutor that he had bribed the military and officials of the Greek Ministry of Defense with several million euros, with the knowledge of the executive floor. In a search warrant of the Bremen District Court, it says: "As early as 1999, the then STN Atlas Elektronik GmbH had asked the top management about handling unusually high commission payments to the 'cooperation partner' of a Greek commercial agent." Former manager Ulrich Grillo, BDI president since 2013, said the corresponding internal letter was written a month before he joined the company.

The process ended in a settlement. Atlas Elektronik paid around 48 million euros to the state treasury, so that the company's profits are siphoned off from corruption-based deals in Greece and Peru. In return, the investigations into the company on suspicion of bribery and corruption were discontinued.
