Court declares the development plan for the Datteln 4 coal-fired power plant invalid

Environmentalists get justice before the Higher Administrative Court of North Rhine-Westphalia in the fight against the Uniper power plant. The 1100 megawatt block should remain connected to the grid for the time being.

According to an assessment by the Higher Administrative Court of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, the development plan for the controversial Datteln 4 coal-fired power plant is invalid. "The development plan of the city of Datteln is ineffective," said the presiding judge Detlev Klein Altstedde on Thursday in Münster. Revision is not allowed...

Coal exit

The political decision not to mine coal or to use it any longer is referred to as a coal phase-out. As with the oil phase-out, reasons for phasing out coal are, in particular, environmental protection, climate protection and health protection (avoidance of damage to health from air pollutants that are released during the burning of coal).

Coal is currently used in large quantities for the generation of electrical energy in coal-fired power plants, for heating, in the chemical industry, steel industry and other branches of industry. The coal industry also includes the necessary infrastructure for extraction in open-cast mining or mines and for transport (e.g. coal ports, coal railways, conveyor belts, etc.). The phase-out of coal does not only mean an end to coal-fired power generation, but to a certain extent also a relative "end" or at least a strong reduction in the material use of coal (for example, in the form of an exit from coking for iron and steel production) .

In order to meet the goals of the climate protection treaty adopted in Paris in 2015 of limiting man-made global warming to well below 2 ° C, a coal phase-out by around 2030 is necessary worldwide. As of 2015, coal accounted for 40,7 percent of the global electricity mix. In the European Union, coal provided around 2020% of electricity in 13, which is significantly behind wind and solar energy with around 20%. Overall, the share of electricity from coal has halved since 2015; In 2020 alone it fell by a fifth ...
