August 24, 2021 - Call for climate protest

Thursday, August 26.8.2021th, XNUMX, at the OVG in Münster for the closure of Datteln IV.

The occasion is the hearing of the lawsuits from several private individuals, the City of Waltrop and BUND NRW before the OVG here in Münster. It is about the illegal development plan and the consequences for the coal-fired power plant of the Finnish coal and nuclear company Fortum / Uniper. A judgment can possibly be expected on Thursday evening, but no later than Friday morning.

The public OVG hearing takes place in the "Carl Severing" police school at Weseler Str. 264 / Bonhoeffer Str. Entrance.

Our protest is intended to put pressure on the state and federal government and all parties in particular so that effective action can be taken against the climate crisis! Datteln IV has to be disconnected from the grid immediately, and the coal phase-out has to come much faster.

Here are the three protest actions on Thursday by the Bündnis Klimaalarm Münster in cooperation with the network "We stop dates IV":

8.30-10.30 a.m .: Vigil in front of the OVG meeting building in the police school on Weseler Str.

From 12 p.m .: Fridays before Future vigil in Stubengasse (until Friday 17 p.m.)

17 pm: Bike demonstration from the "Carl Severing" police school (Weseler Str./Eingang Bonhoeffer Str) in the city center to Stubengasse - from around 18 pm rally together with the Friday vigil.

Alexandra Koroleva from the Russian environmental NGO Ecodefense, who not only works under the most difficult conditions against the transport of uranium waste from Gronau to Russia, but also intensively against the extremely dirty coal mining in Kuzbass, will make a speech. Datteln IV can be largely supplied from Kuzbass (and from Colombia) - that is neither "clean" nor "climate-friendly". Alexandra has been living in exile in Germany for two years.

The first protests took place in Datteln on Sunday, a press conference and an information event with Alexandra are planned there today (Tuesday).

Coal and nuclear policy are closely related and are often operated by the same groups as Fortum / Uniper or RWE - the fight for international climate justice is a difficult task, which is why we are not giving up.

Be there on Thursday in Münster!

IAEA Safety Guarantee for Fukushima Water Release Begins

It was agreed that the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) would assist Japan in releasing tritiated water from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant. The IAEA's first official visit will take place in September before the water, which will be diluted to drinking quality, is released.

Disposal of radioactive water in the ocean

Since the Fukushima nuclear disaster, the nuclear power plant has accumulated 1.25 million tons of radioactive water, which was stored in 2021 tanks on the area of the nuclear power plant as of March 1.061. The nuclear power plant will run out of space by 2022. It was suggested that the government could have solved the problem by allocating land around the power plant for water tanks, since that land was already deemed unsuitable for human life but the government was reluctant to act.

Ten years after the nuclear disaster, on April 13, 2021, the Japanese government (cabinet of Prime Minister Suga) unanimously approved that TEPCO may dispose of the stored radioactive water in the Pacific for a period of 30 years. The cabinet claimed that the disposed water would be treated and diluted to standard for drinking water. Prime Minister Suga, on the other hand, declined to drink a cup of purified water that was offered to him when he visited the power plant in 2020. The decision was made because the operator TEPCO ran out of storage space for water at the site, Japanese officials said.

The Tokyo government not only brought environmentalists and fishing groups from the Fukushima prefecture against it, who had resolutely opposed the discharge of the contaminated Fukushima water into the ocean - Japan's neighboring countries also opposed it. China, North and South Korea are protesting against Japan's decision, which was made without prior consultation with neighboring countries. Various other governments have raised concerns, including the governments of Taiwan, Russia, the Philippines, Belize, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, and Mexico.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry condemned Tokyo's decision. This was taken "without taking domestic and foreign doubts and criticism into account": "This approach is extremely irresponsible and will seriously damage international public health and safety". The disposal of radioactively contaminated sewage affects not only the ecological environment of Japan, but also regional and global ecological security. China was in favor of a technical working group headed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) being set up as soon as possible, which should involve all parties concerned, including China ...
