Renewables | wind | expansion of wind power

Again more wind turbines on land

More wind turbines are being built on land again, but there are still fewer than in the strongest years of expansion. This is shown by current figures from the Federal Wind Energy Association, which are available to the ARD capital city studio.

Wind power is the most important energy source for electricity generation in Germany. And most recently, the capacity of the onshore wind farms has increased again - after the expansion had dropped significantly between 2018 and 2020. The latest figures from the German Wind Energy Association are exclusively available to the ARD capital city studio. According to this, a net output of around 830 megawatts was added in the first six months of this year. Compared to the first half of 2020, this corresponds to an increase of almost two thirds. For the whole of 2021, the association expects a net increase in output of 2,2 to 2,5 gigawatts. 3,5 to almost 4,9 gigawatts were added in the peak years between 2014 and 2017 ...

Wind energy

Wind energy or wind power is the large-scale use of wind as a renewable energy source. The kinetic energy of the wind has been used since ancient times to make energy from the environment available for technical purposes. In the past, the mechanical energy made available with windmills was used directly on site to drive machines and devices. With their help, grain was ground into flour, groundwater was brought to the surface, or sawmills were operated. Today, the generation of electrical energy with wind turbines is by far the most important use.

At the end of 2020, wind turbines with a nominal output of approx. 743 GW were installed worldwide, 35,3 GW of which were offshore. Not quite half of this capacity (approx. 347 GW) was installed in Asia and the Pacific region, approx. 220 GW in Europe and around 170 GW in America, while only a few GW are installed in Africa and the Middle East. In 2020, the systems installed worldwide provided around 1590 TWh of electrical energy, according to BP's figures; corresponding to around 5,9% of global electricity production. Its share in global primary energy consumption of 154.620 TWh, of which it tends to be underrepresented due to the calculation method, was 1,0%. In good locations, the electricity production costs of wind turbines were already cheaper in 2013 than the electricity production costs of new coal and nuclear power plants. Depending on various factors such as B. Wind frequency (here: quantitatively and qualitatively suitable wind resources - on site) and system design, wind turbines achieve between 1.400 and over 5.000 full load hours (the latter at the best offshore locations) ...

Opponents of wind power

Doubtful organizations

In principle, wind energy enjoys a high level of acceptance in Germany. According to a survey by TS Infratest from 2013, 60% of those questioned rated a wind turbine in their neighborhood as good or very good. However, wind power plants are not undisputed: there is also resistance from citizens or citizens' groups.

In the last few years some supraregional associations and alliances have made a name for themselves, which have not only committed themselves to the fight against wind energy, but also against the energy transition as such. Some of these organizations prefer the expansion of nuclear power and fossil fuels as alternatives.

This was also taken up in a broadcast of the ARD magazine Monitor "Wind power: The wrong game of the electricity lobby" on March 25, 2004, which is unfortunately no longer available on the Internet ...
