July 01, 2021 - Early shutdown for Taiwanese reactor

Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) today announced the final shutdown of Unit 1 of the Kuosheng Nuclear Power Plant. The 985 MWe boiling water reactor was supposed to be shut down at the end of December this year, but a lack of storage capacity for spent fuel has forced the state-owned company to shut down the unit early to prepare for a major overhaul of the plant...

Electrabel: Nuclear phase-out can no longer be postponed

Belgium is phasing out nuclear power. That is stipulated by law. The last nuclear reactor is also scheduled to go offline in 2025. The date is set. For the operator Engie Electrabel, it is even irrevocable and is causing concern among some politicians.

Reactor Doel 2022 will be finished in October 3. The power plant has been criticized because there are gas pockets in the steel of the pressure vessel – just like in the Tihange 2 reactor, which is scheduled to go offline for good in February 2023. This news has also brought relief in our border region...

Belgium - Seven reactors

Measured against the size of the country, Belgium has a comparatively large arsenal of nuclear power plants with five reactors over 1.000 MW and two more over 400 MW.

The entry into the peaceful use of nuclear power in Belgium, which has been a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) since 1958, began with the two research reactors BR-1 and BR-2 in Mol. They went into operation in 1956 and 1961 and are now still active. From 1962 to 1987 the prototype BR-3 (Belgian Reactor-3) was operated in Mol, which was imported from the USA and was the first pressurized water reactor in Europe.

In 1966, according to a report by the World Nuclear Association (WNA), the decision was made to build the commercial reactors Doel-1, -2 and Tihange-1. In 1974 another four reactors were ordered for these two locations. Plans for an additional eighth reactor with 1.400 MW were discarded in 1989. This means that seven reactors are currently in operation ...

Increasing danger from old nuclear power plants

Outdated, embrittled, without spare parts: The combination of technical aging and obsolescence makes old reactors increasingly prone to failure - this makes the often planned extension of the service life of old nuclear power plants a highly risky undertaking. The only logical consequence for old reactors is to shut them down before it is too late and a worst-case scenario occurs!

Nuclear power plants are complex, high-risk machines with many different materials and components that age and wear differently. 84% of reactors in the EU have been in operation for more than 30 years. Since new nuclear power plants are not economically competitive, old reactors are to be extended beyond their originally approved term for financial reasons. However, this harbors great dangers for millions of people.

Some easily accessible components of old reactors can be brought under technical control through regular testing and maintenance - just like with an old car. Other parts such as the highly radioactive reactor pressure vessel and pipelines enclosed in concrete are hardly accessible, so that regular maintenance is difficult and repair is as good as impossible ...
