Nuclear power: the older, the rustier it is

The last German nuclear power plants will soon be shut down. But the risk of an accident is greater than ever. In Neckarwestheim, their old age becomes apparent.

Neckarwestheim II (Baden-Wuerttemberg)

Nuclear power plant near Heilbronn

The Neckarwestheim II (GKN-2) pressurized water reactor is located directly on the Neckar, 10 km south of Heilbronn (Baden-Württemberg). It went into operation on December 29, 1988 and has an output of 1.400 MW. The manufacturer was the Kraftwerk Union (KWU), the owner and operator is the EnBW subsidiary EnBW Kernkraft GmbH (EnKK).

The Neckarwestheim I pressurized water reactor, which was shut down in 2011, and an interim storage facility are located at the same location.

Earthquake hazard

Geologists have been pointing out for many years that the reactors in the Rheingraben, Neckarwestheim, Philippsburg and Biblis are only designed for earthquakes with a magnitude of 4,5 to 5,5 on the Richter scale. In the Rheingraben, however, strengths of 1356 to 6,5 were already achieved in 6,7, and of 1775 in 56/6,1. Such earthquakes could happen again at any time.

The danger of earthquakes was also pointed out in an expert opinion in the 1970s - the expert opinion was ignored by the CDU state government, the expert no longer received an order from the state, and the nuclear power plant was built anyway ...

GLOBAL 2000

Increasing danger from old nuclear power plants

Outdated, embrittled, without spare parts: The combination of technical aging and obsolescence makes old reactors increasingly prone to failure - this makes the often planned extension of the service life of old nuclear power plants a highly risky undertaking. The only logical consequence for old reactors is to shut them down before it is too late and a worst-case scenario occurs!

Nuclear power plants are complex, high-risk machines with many different materials and components that age and wear differently. 84% of reactors in the EU have been in operation for more than 30 years. Since new nuclear power plants are not economically competitive, old reactors are to be extended beyond their originally approved term for financial reasons. However, this harbors great dangers for millions of people.

Some easily accessible components of old reactors can be brought under technical control through regular testing and maintenance - just like with an old car. Other parts such as the highly radioactive reactor pressure vessel and pipelines enclosed in concrete are hardly accessible, so that regular maintenance is difficult and repair is as good as impossible ...
