Nuclear power plants light

February 16, 2021 - GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy establishes Canadian SMR company

In the case of large nuclear power plants worth billions with an output of more than 1000 MW, the number of global investors is now manageable, the risks are too great. In addition to the high construction risk (capital costs and construction time), the hardly assessable market risks (electricity price development) are an ever-present problem for the overall financing and investors of such mammoth projects.

With so-called Small Modular Reactors (SMR), a kind of nuclear power plant light, the nuclear industry is trying to revitalize the market for nuclear power plants. The term "small nuclear power plants" is also relative. GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy plans to launch 300 MWe 'small' nuclear power plant in Canada...

Small Modular Reactor (SMR)

SMR since the 1950s

The idea of operating more cost-effective mini nuclear power plants - Small Modular Reactors (SMR) compared to regular reactors - is decades old and has been increasingly taken up again in recent years against the background of the climate debate.

According to the definition of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), SMR includes all advanced reactors that produce electricity up to a maximum of 300 MW per unit.

The USA and the Soviet Union built the first mini-reactors as early as the 1950s in order to enable electricity to be supplied in remote areas. The technical basis were reactors in submarines. Examples of early US SMR are the PM-2A in Greenland and the PM-3A in McMurdo in Antarctica ...

MiK - Military-Industrial Complex

The term military-industrial complex (MIK) is used in socio-critical analyzes to describe the close cooperation and mutual relationships between politicians, representatives of the military and representatives of the armaments industry. In the US, think tanks such as PNAC are seen as a possible additional stakeholder group.

Coining of the term

The concept of a military-industrial complex was coined in 1956 by the American sociologist Charles Wright Mills under the title The Power Elite (German: "The American Elite: Society and Power in the United States"). Mills shows the close interests between the military, business and political elites in America after the Second World War. The 9th chapter "The Military Ascendancy" is particularly relevant. Mills does not use the term “military-industrial complex”. He speaks of the "military establishment". Mills saw it as a serious threat to the democratic state structure and a risk for military clashes between the United States and the Soviet Union. In criticizing the military's influence on science and research, Mills cites as an example that Eisenhower, as ex-general, was director of the University of Columbia. Eisenhower, of all people, later took up Mills' criticism and coined the term military-industrial complex ...
