February 02nd, 2021 - Green electricity - Safely through the dark doldrums

Little wind, hardly any sun - in January, wind turbines and solar systems weakened for days. How risky is that for the power grids?

Climate protectionists had good reasons to celebrate at the beginning of the year: Vattenfall shut down its coal-fired power plant in the Hamburg district of Moorburg, and some power plant units in the Rhineland also went offline. But of all days, many other coal-fired power plants in the country were running at full speed - as if they wanted to show what they could do with all their might. Power plant operator Leag, for example, reported that its large-scale plants in Lusatia are working at full capacity. Together with the gas-fired power plants, the charcoal piles secured the power supply in Germany in those days.

Because the wind turbines and photovoltaic systems weakened a lot at the beginning of January. There was a lull throughout Germany and off the coasts, and the sun was hardly visible. In the period between the morning of January 6th and the morning of January 10th, for example, wind energy on land and at sea together with photovoltaics did not exceed ten gigawatts of output - but electricity consumption in these hours was between 51 and 74 gigawatts. A similar picture emerged between January 15th and 17th...

The energy transition

The realignment of energy policy and economy in Germany, with which for the first time a large industrial state is converting its fossil-nuclear energy generation to renewable, is being closely monitored internationally. As a "laboratory of the future" and an innovative pioneering achievement, it has also been compared with the US lunar mission.

The aim of the energy transition is a sustainable, decentralized energy supply, which is to be achieved with a combination of renewable energies, intelligent energy storage, energy saving and increased efficiency. A success of the German energy transition would prove that energy supply and prosperity are possible even without conventional energy sources ...

Combined gas and steam power plant

A combined cycle power plant or gas and steam turbine power plant (combined cycle power plant for short) is a power plant in which the waste heat from a gas turbine power plant is used in a steam power plant. The exhaust gases from the turbine serve as a heat source for a downstream waste heat boiler, which in turn acts as a steam generator for the steam turbine.

With this combined operation, a higher degree of efficiency is achieved in the two thermodynamic cycle processes together than with separate gas turbines in open operation and conventionally fired steam power plants. Combined power plants with electrical efficiencies of up to 63,08% are among the most efficient conventional power plants ...

green power

The term green electricity is usually used to describe electricity supply contracts with which a direct flow of money is established between the buyer and supplier of electrical energy from environmentally friendly renewable energy sources. This is done in contrast to conventionally generated electricity from nuclear energy and fossil fuels, such as mainly coal, crude oil and natural gas. Synonymous terms are green electricity and natural electricity. The main benefit of a green electricity tariff is not the direct reduction in CO2 emissions, but the promotion of investments in regenerative technology ...

Storage power plant

In the context of electrical energy engineering and power generation, a storage power plant refers to a large energy store in which electrical energy can be temporarily stored. Storage power plants convert electrical energy, depending on the type of power plant, into potential energy (positional energy), kinetic energy, chemical energy or thermal energy, which can be stored in this form for a certain time and converted back into electrical energy when required.

During storage and recovery, depending on the type of power plant and the duration of the storage, there is a loss of energy, from which the average efficiency of a system can be determined ...
