Nuclear Weapons Prohibition Treaty

January 25, 2021 - Why Germany refuses

The ban on nuclear weapons will finally become universal international law on January 22, 2021. Against the opposition of the federal government.

On Saturday, Honduras became the 50th country to ratify the treaty on the global ban on nuclear weapons of mass murder passed by the UN General Assembly in July 2017. And a great success for the many hundreds of non-governmental organizations involved in the "International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons" that initiated this agreement - against the massive resistance of the USA, Germany and other countries.

Last week, the Trump administration called on numerous contracting states to reverse their ratification. On the grounds that a ban on nuclear weapons would weaken the NPT Treaty, which has existed since 1970 and which only prohibits the transfer of these instruments of mass murder ...

Nuclear Weapons Prohibition Treaty

On July 7, 2017, representatives of 122 countries passed a draft of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which was signed by numerous countries on September 20, 2017 and should be ratified from that date. The contract comes into force on January 22, 2021. However, the nuclear powers do not plan to sign the treaty, nor do most of the NATO countries, including Germany. You consider the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty to be sufficient ...

Nuclear Weapons Prohibition Treaty

The Nuclear Weapons Prohibition Treaty (abbreviated AVV, English: Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, abbreviated TPNW) is an international agreement that prohibits the development, production, testing, acquisition, storage, transport, stationing and use of nuclear weapons, as well as the threat thereof. In December 2016, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution with a mandate to negotiate such a treaty. The first round of negotiations took place in New York in March 2017, the second in July 2017. 132 of the 124 member states took part in the first conference and 193 in the second, including Austria as a co-initiator, Switzerland, Iran and Saudi Arabia . The official and de facto nuclear powers and the NATO countries, with the exception of the Netherlands, did not take part in the negotiations.

The drafted contract was approved on July 7, 2017 with 122 votes; the Netherlands voted against, Singapore abstained. At the UN General Assembly in September 2017, 53 states initially signed. By October 24, 2020, 84 states had signed and 50 had ratified the treaty. On January 22, 2021, 90 days after the 50th ratification, the treaty entered into force ...
