January 15, 2021 - New money for new nuclear reactors

Why governments are subsidizing a failed form of energy

A new president will be sworn in in the United States this month. His government has resolved to take the global climate crisis seriously and, unlike his predecessor, to consistently work towards reducing CO2 production. That initially sounds promising to European ears. But then comes the catch: the promised climate policy reorientation not only includes the expansion of renewable energies, but also massive subsidies for the nuclear industry.

Like all previous governments since the Second World War, Biden is also committed to supporting the civilian nuclear industry with massive state aid - mind you, an industry that has only existed for around 70 years thanks to massive subsidies and should therefore not exactly be suspected of "start-up financing". require ...

-

IMHO

They're going to do shit and build big, expensive reactors. They only want promises for even more money and thus a guarantee for the future of the nuclear industry and MIK ...

What is / was TRISO?

THTR-Rundbrief No. 152 Dec. 2019 - Deliver energy to the "soldiers in the open field" with TRISO and Mini-HTRs!

Urenco develops and supports TRISO fuel elements for Small Modular Reactors (SMR) in order to continue doing good business with enriched uranium, especially in the USA, Canada and Great Britain.

"TRiststructural-ISOtropic" is a nuclear fuel made from triple-jacketed Pac spheres (plutonium, americium, curium). There is also a layer of carbon. TRISO was developed for the Dragon high-temperature reactor (1967-1975). TRISO was later used at AVR Jülich, but not in this specific form at THTR Hamm!

Why is there an increased use of TRISO now?

In the USA, uranium that was previously not suitable for nuclear weapons has been enriched on a larger scale, almost only in the range of less than 5 percent. Up to just under 20 percent enrichment level is not considered nuclear weapons capable and is referred to as HALEU fuel. It is precisely this fuel that will be needed for the small generation IV reactors of the future, which are becoming increasingly popular. In order to be able to survive in this new lucrative market, HALEU fuel must be produced in the USA as quickly as possible in order to be armed against the competition from Russia and China (Baotou) ...

Small Modular Reactor (SMR)

SMR since the 1950s

The idea of operating more cost-effective mini nuclear power plants - Small Modular Reactors (SMR) compared to regular reactors - is decades old and has been increasingly taken up again in recent years against the background of the climate debate.

According to the definition of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), SMR includes all advanced reactors that produce electricity up to a maximum of 300 MW per unit.

The USA and the Soviet Union built the first mini-reactors as early as the 1950s in order to enable electricity to be supplied in remote areas. The technical basis were reactors in submarines. Examples of early US SMR are the PM-2A in Greenland and the PM-3A in McMurdo in Antarctica.

When atomic energy seemed to be about to experience a renaissance in 2008, the German Temme AG planned to build a three by three meter nuclear power plant called "catchy". It should get by without a large infrastructure, only use the heat of a decaying radioactive isotope, be buried underground and therefore be particularly safe ...

Nuclear reactors - reactor types - special types

There are also some special types for special applications. For example, small reactors with highly enriched fuel were designed to power spacecraft that do not require liquid coolant. These reactors are not to be confused with the isotope batteries. Air-cooled reactors, which always require highly enriched fuel, were also built, for example for physical experiments in the BREN Tower in Nevada. Reactors were constructed for the propulsion of space vehicles, in which liquid hydrogen is used to cool the fuel. However, this work did not go beyond soil tests (NERVA project, Timberwind project). Reactors in which the fuel is in gaseous form (gas core reactor) also did not get beyond the experimental stage.

We are currently actively working on new reactor concepts around the world, the Generation IV concepts ...
