Tomorrow, Monday, there will be protest meetings against the impending transport of uranium waste from the Westphalian uranium enrichment plant in Gronau to the Russian Novouralsk nuclear plant. After opponents of nuclear power in Münster had filed a lawsuit against a blanket ban on assemblies before the Münster Administrative Court, discussions began among those involved in the proceedings. As a result, the city of Münster has now confirmed the registration for a vigil tomorrow, Monday, from 11 a.m. at the level of the freight station on Alfred-Krupp-Weg / corner of Roddestrasse. The participants in the assembly must wear face masks and keep a distance of 1,50 m from each other. A judgment was no longer necessary after the city of Münster gave in. A meeting registration for the bridge area on Max-Planck-Straße in front of the main entrance of the uranium enrichment plant in Gronau is now available for tomorrow morning in Gronau.
"The proceedings before the Münster Administrative Court made it clear that there are no blanket assembly bans even in Corona times. However, even the current requirements show how little democratic freedom of movement currently exists. We also remind you that the assembly is only necessary because the uranium enricher Urenco from Gronau, despite the considerable dangers of uranium hexafluoride transport, insists rigidly on such an operationally completely insignificant transport. We urenco again urgently to refrain from this dangerous uranium waste export to Russia even at the last minute - the emergency services and hospitals along the transport route would certainly welcome that very much, "explained Matthias Eickhoff from the SOFA (immediate nuclear phase-out) initiative in Münster.
The criticism of the planned uranium waste transport from Gronau to Novouralsk is meanwhile increasing: on Thursday, the city of Münster had urged Urenco in writing to suspend uranium transports during the corona pandemic. The Greens MPs Sylvia Kotting-Uhl and Oliver Krischer now called on Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer to prohibit not only Castor transports, but also the current uranium transports in Corona times. And the NRW state chairwoman of the Greens, Mona Neubaur, also called the transport "irresponsible". The left-wing member of the Bundestag Hubertus Zdebel called for a "comprehensive uranium export ban".
Backgrounds:
Between 1995 and 2009, Urenco already exported all "residues" from uranium enrichment as nuclear waste for final storage in Russia in order to avoid the much more expensive disposal of uranium waste in Germany. Due to international protests, there was then a ten-year break until exports were resumed in spring 2019. Since then, a total of 11 uranium waste trains have left Gronau with a total of 6600 t of uranium hexafluoride.
The uranium waste trains always drove from Gronau via Steinfurt through Münster and then on via Drensteinfurt, Hamm, the Unna district, the Ruhr area, Duisburg, Viersen, Mönchengladbach, Venlo and many Dutch towns to the port of Amsterdam. There it was loaded to St. Petersburg. The destination is the closed city of Novouralsk, which outsiders may only visit with special permission.
During the last uranium waste transports, opponents of nuclear power blocked two uranium waste trains between Gronau and Münster for several hours by abseiling. The protests are also directed against the frequent transport of uranium by truck, which is associated with the operation of the Gronau uranium factory. In Russia, too, protests against uranium waste exports occurred in St. Petersburg, Moscow and even at the destination in the sealed off nuclear city of Novouralsk. In addition, 2019 people in Russia have signed a protest petition against uranium waste exports from Germany.
In mid-March, the Federal Ministry of the Interior canceled a nuclear waste transport planned for the beginning of April from the British Sellafield to the decommissioned Biblis nuclear power plant in Hesse due to the corona risk situation.
An Easter March appeal is currently directed against the continued operation of the Gronau uranium enrichment plant, for which around 20 initiatives and associations are currently collecting signatures by means of an online petition. The petition can be found at www.openpetition.de/!cfbxn

According to information from the regional anti-nuclear power initiatives, the Federal Association of Citizens 'Initiatives Environmental Protection (BBU) and the doctors' organization IPPNW, the uranium enricher Urenco from Gronau is intensively preparing a second attempt for a new transport of uranium waste from the uranium enrichment plant in the Westphalian town of Gronau to the Russian one for next Monday, April 6th Novouralsk nuclear plant plans. The Russian transport ship Mikhail Dudin is now on its way to the transport port of Amsterdam, where it is due to arrive on Monday.
Meanwhile, protests against the uranium transport are growing. For example, Wolfgang Heuer, who is responsible for security in the city of Münster, asked the Urenco Group in writing yesterday, Thursday, to cancel the transport of nuclear waste. Heuer announced this in writing at the request of the SOFA (immediate nuclear phase-out) initiative in Münster. This is a novelty and a clear message to Urenco, which is expressly welcomed by the initiatives and associations.
The uranium waste trains run from Gronau via Steinfurt through Münster and then on via Drensteinfurt, Hamm, the Unna district, the Ruhr area, Duisburg, Viersen, Mönchengladbach, Venlo and many Dutch towns to the port of Amsterdam.
The anti-nuclear power initiatives and associations again urgently urge Urenco as well as the NRW state government and the Federal Ministry of the Interior to refrain from this additional and completely avoidable burden on the public and emergency services in the difficult Corona times. Nuclear waste exports are not for energy supply and are an irresponsible luxury activity, especially these days.
"The population and many companies are currently having to accept massive restrictions because of the Corona crisis. Urenco, on the other hand, seems to live in a parallel world. However, it cannot be that the group with its German shareholders RWE and EON is now traveling several hundred tons of nuclear waste sends, binds police forces and burdens the local fire brigades and hospitals with additional precautionary measures. People in Russia are only allowed to protest to a very limited extent, there are currently strict exit restrictions. Urenco must now urgently show public responsibility and make a binding cancellation of the transport, "said Udo Buchholz from the local working group Environment Gronau.
