Nov 29, 2019 - Urenco's massive uranium waste problems:

- Uranium conversion in UK continues to be delayed

- EUR 300 million savings program due to cost overruns

- December 9th: New uranium waste transport Gronau-Russia?

- Police summons in Novouralsk

The uranium enricher Urenco, who operates the only uranium enrichment plant in Germany in Gronau / Westphalia, continues to have massive problems with the disposal of the depleted uranium hexafluoride (UF6), which is produced in large quantities as waste during uranium enrichment. According to the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Group's own deconversion system for depleted UF6 at the UK site in Capenhurst is still not available. The considerable construction delays and cost overruns have had an impact on the entire group for years, including in Germany. Nuclear opponents assume that these problems are a reason for the desperate attempts by Urenco to dump the company's own uranium waste cheaply to Russia. For Monday, December 9th, they expect the next uranium waste shipment from Gronau to Russia and announce new protests.

The British deconversion plant in Capenhurst was inaugurated in June in the presence of the then British Industry Minister Andrew Stephenson. It was originally scheduled to go into operation in 2015 and cost around £ 400 million (approx. € 460 million). According to British media reports, however, there were considerable problems with the construction, so that the construction costs were already estimated at around 1 billion pounds (approx. 1,15 billion euros) in June. Today, five months after the inauguration, there still seem to be problems. Deconversion plants are supposed to convert depleted uranium hexafluoride into the more storable and more stable uranium oxide (U308). In Gronau, a newly built warehouse for uranium oxide has been empty since 2014 and, according to Urenco, should remain empty until at least 2024.

As a result of the significant cost increases in Capenhurst, Urenco launched a group-wide savings program worth EUR 2017 million as early as 300. In Germany z. B. the location Bad Bentheim (15 km north of Gronau) closed. As early as 2016, Urenco said it had signed a first contract with WDR for Capenhurst to export depleted UF6 from Capenhurst to Russia. The deconversion plant in Capenhurst is also far too small to convert all of Urenco's UF6 into storable uranium oxide. For Gronau there is still no workable solution for the safe disposal of uranium waste. In addition to the uranium enrichment plant in Gronau, the international Urenco Group, in which RWE and E.ON are also involved, operates uranium enrichment plants in Almelo (NL), Capenhust (GB) and Eunice (USA).

"It is obvious that Urenco is completely overwhelmed by the harmless disposal of uranium waste. Construction delays, cost explosions, austerity programs and now cheap exports to Russia speak for themselves. In Russia, Urenco even accepts the construction of new and technically very dangerous fast breeders, to get rid of your own nuclear waste - that is irresponsible. Anyone who deals with their nuclear waste in this way is not suitable for the operation of highly dangerous nuclear facilities - we demand an immediate ban on the export of uranium waste to Russia and the immediate shutdown of the uranium enrichment plants in Gronau and at the other Urenco locations , "explained Christina Burchert from the Working Group Environment Schüttorf.

On this Sunday, December 1st, the traditional Sunday walk will take place in Gronau at the uranium enrichment plant at 14 p.m.

Protests in St. Petersburg, Moscow and Novouralsk:

First police summons

Meanwhile, there have been initial protests against the arrival of the last uranium waste train in Russia in St. Petersburg, Moscow and also at the destination Novouralsk. According to information from Russian environmentalists, several people in Novouralsk were summoned by the police. "It is absurd that Urenco, the shareholders RWE and EON as well as the German government want to take advantage of the difficult political situation in Russia to get rid of the Gronau uranium waste. It cannot be that the removal of the Gronau uranium waste in Russia leads to further repression measures leads against peaceful citizens. Does Urenco management take full responsibility for this? " asked Matthias Eickhoff from the action alliance Münsterland against nuclear facilities.

Map of the nuclear world:

URENCO sends uranium hexafluoride from Gronau to Russia every few weeks, what will happen with it - if it's enriched?

The next nuclear waste transport sponsored by URENCO from Gronau via Amsterdam and St. Petersburg to Novouralsk should start on December 09th, 2019. We will only see on the day of the transport whether and when it will go again this time via Münster, Hamm and across the Ruhr area, or possibly also directly via Enschede and Lochem, or via Enschede and Almelo, to Appeldorn and on to the port of Amsterdam .
