Nov. 27, 2019 - Uranium waste from Gronau reaches St. Petersburg:
- Protest at the German Consulate General in St. Petersburg
- 44 signatures for Russian online petition
Rosatom also wants to build fast breeders for uranium waste!
The cargo ship Mikhail Dudin reached the port of St. Petersburg yesterday, Tuesday. On board are around 80 barrels with a total of around 900 t of depleted uranium hexafluoride (UF6) from the German uranium enrichment plant in Gronau / Westphalia. The nuclear waste is now being loaded onto a train for the Russian nuclear facility in Novouralsk.
As early as Monday there was a protest at the German consulate in St. Petersburg, as reported by the Tagesschau yesterday. At the weekend there were also various protests in other cities in Russia, including Novouralsk and Moscow. An online petition by Greenpeace Russia against the continuation of uranium waste exports from Gronau to Russia has now received around 44 signatures.
Also alarming is the latest announcement by the Russian state nuclear company Rosatom via the Russian news agency Ria Novosti that it intends to build fast breeders for the disposal of the approximately 1 million tons of depleted UF6 in Russia by 2080. One then wants to use plutonium-containing MOX fuel elements. Due to the considerable technical problems and dangers of fast breeders, the Russian and German environmental organizations doubt that Urenco and the federal government can actually guarantee the harmless and purely civilian use of the depleted UF6 in Russia in the future. In Germany, the construction of the fast breeder in Kalkar failed, as is well known, due to the incalculable risks - today there is an amusement park in the ruins.
"There are now protests in several regions of Russia, because the deal between the German and Russian nuclear industries is obviously a considerable burden for future generations. We do not want any storage facilities for depleted UF6 that stretch to the horizon. We do not want a future either with fast breeders - we want renewable energies, "said Rashid Alimov, energy expert from Greenpeace Russia.
"It is becoming increasingly clear that there is no harmless disposal of Gronau uranium waste in Russia. Instead, the exports of the uranium enrichment company Urenco are even fueling the expansion of the Russian nuclear industry - how can the federal government simply stand by and watch? Uranium waste exports are irresponsible and must be stopped - Even when it comes to waste, uranium enrichment is an extremely dangerous technology that should have no future, "added Kerstin Rudek from the Lüchow-Dannenberg citizens' initiative for environmental protection.
This Sunday, December 1st, the traditional Sunday walk will take place in Gronau at the uranium enrichment plant at 14 p.m.
