Vigil against the transport of nuclear waste through Hamm!
Monday, November 18th, from 13.30 p.m.
Willy-Brandt-Platz in front of the main train station in Hamm
On Monday there will be a nuclear waste transport from Gronau via Hamm to Russia. The uranium train is expected to transport 600 t of radioactive and highly toxic uranium hexafluoride (UF6) in twelve wagons, which are to remain as nuclear waste in Russia at the Novouralsk nuclear facility near Yekaterinburg.
We demand an immediate halt to the nuclear waste deal between Urenco and the Russian state nuclear company Rosatom. The Russian environmental organization Ecodefense calls the deal "cynical and immoral" and Greenpeace Russia demands that Russia should not be the nuclear waste dump for Gronau uranium enrichment. In Germany, Urenco belongs to the energy giants RWE and EON and one third each to the British and Dutch states.
We criticize the fact that the so-called “re-enrichment” of the alleged “valuable material” is just a cloak so that Urenco in Germany can save the very expensive, harmless disposal of the depleted uranium. In Gronau, around 5000 t of depleted UF6 are produced as waste from uranium enrichment every year. In addition to the UAA, around 22 t of depleted UF000 are currently stored in the open air, according to the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, because Urenco does not want to finance the safe disposal. This is a scandal and Russia is not the solution!
In Gronau, Münster, Drensteinfurt and Hamm there will be vigils along the transport route in front of the train stations on Monday. Vladimir Slivyak from the Russian environmental organization Ecodefense, which in Russia itself is branded as "foreign agents" by the state, will be there.
Please everyone come to the vigil!

More information from:
SOFA (Immediate nuclear phase-out) Münster
Dear friends,
In a few days the next uranium waste train from Gronau through Münster and Hamm in the direction of Amsterdam will be rolling - from there it will continue by ship to St. Petersburg and even further to Novouralsk in the Urals.
On this occasion we are organizing three actions and events on this Sunday and Monday, to which we cordially invite you, in particular to the information event with Vladimir Slivyak from Moscow:
1. The rally in front of the Gronau uranium enrichment plant will take place on Sunday (17th) at 13 pm.
From Münster there is a joint journey by train. The meeting point for this is at 10.50 a.m. at the main entrance of the main train station. In Gronau there is a free shuttle bus from the train station to the uranium enrichment plant.
2. On Sunday evening (17th) at 20 pm in the Umwelthaus Münster, Zumsandstr. 15, an information event on the subject of "Uranium waste exports from Gronau to Russia" and the general situation of the environmental movement in Russia.
The speaker is the co-chairman of the Russian environmental organization Ecodefense, Vladimir Slivyak. In Russia, the very courageously working NGO is regarded by the state as a "foreign agent". The second co-chair of Ecodefense, Alexandra Koroleva, therefore asked for political asylum in Germany in June. We are therefore very curious to see what Vladimir will be reporting now, because uranium waste transports are now a public issue in Russia too.
3. One day later, on Monday, November 18, another vigil will start at 10.45 am at Münster Central Station
against the feared passage of the uranium waste train from Gronau, which will again transport around 600 t of depleted uranium hexafluoride (UF6). UF6 is not only radioactive, but also very toxic, because lethal hydrofluoric acid is produced when it comes into contact with humidity. In previous transports, the uranium trains passed Münster Central Station between 12 noon and 13.30 p.m.
PS: We apologize if the mails have fluttered into your mailbox a little more frequently in the last few weeks. But we think that these resumed nuclear waste exports are absolutely blatant and the possibilities of political intervention for civil society in Russia are much lower than here (and we often have problems here too, being heard or making secret information public). We therefore see the protests expressly as concrete solidarity with our beleaguered friends in Russia, with whom we have been working trustingly for years. We are currently using every opportunity to draw people's attention to the difficult situation here in the Münsterland and beyond.
Where people cover up and lie, the public is an enormously important antidote - that's exactly what we try to achieve as well as possible with our limited possibilities. We ask for your understanding and hope for a strong sign of solidarity and protest in the coming days, please pass the information on yourself if possible - thank you!
And we have already achieved one thing: the media are reporting and the other side has become nervous, here and in Russia.
And on Monday (Nov. 18, 2019) there will also be vigils in other places along the railway line, including in Gronau, Drensteinfurt and Hamm.
These are positive signs.
Atomic greetings from the SOFA

Map of the nuclear world:
The nuclear waste route leads by train from Gronau via Drensteinfurt and Hamm, across the Ruhr area to Amsterdam. With the ship it goes over the North and Baltic Sea to beautiful St. Petersburg and from there, again by train, find out more to Novouralsk north-west of Yekaterinburg in the southern Urals ...
