Press release by the citizens' initiative for environmental protection in Hamm

Even after 30 years:
News about the THTR incident

Thirty years after Chernobyl and the incident in the thorium high-temperature reactor (THTR) Hamm-Uentrop, which became known a few days later on May 4, 1986, a contribution on the Wikipedia discussion page on THTR confirms the worst fears of the opponents of nuclear power plants.

What happened?

Only now did we discover Dr. Hermann Schollmeyer from March 1, 2015. Schollmeyer was the specialist commissioning manager of BBC AG Mannheim, responsible for the shut-off rods produced by this company, as well as for the five steam turbines including the measurement and control technology for the THTR in Hamm.

In the THTR, on May 4, 1986, Kugelbruch once again blocked reactor operation. What happened next is described by Schollmeyer on Wikipedia in section 34, control rods / absorber rods:

"The superfluous blowing out of the broken ball, the filter was already ordered (!), Into the 'Tschernobil cloud' was a decision of the then main operator, Dr. Daoud, which he carried out against every warning and tried to conceal due to a lack of specialist knowledge. "(1)

We state:

The operator did not wait to blow off until the filters that had already been ordered had arrived. Apparently it was believed that the blown radioactive isotopes would not attract attention because of the Chernobyl cloud. Dr. Daoud, as the representative of the main commissioner HRB (Hoch Temperatur Reaktorbau GmbH) and head of start-up operations, acted unauthorized, which is of criminal relevance in view of the release of radioactive substances.

The radioactively contaminated ball fracture was therefore purposely blown out into the environment and thus exposed the population to great danger. The operator knowingly violated essential nuclear law requirements. Due to the release of radioactive substances, this accident can be designated as level 3 on the international assessment scale for nuclear incidents (INES). These new findings also give rise to questions for those responsible for politics and the nuclear supervisory authority in the Ministry of Economics in North Rhine-Westphalia:

How long has the nuclear regulatory authority known about this issue? Why didn't she make him public and prosecute him?

We believe that the authorities are guilty of fraudulent activity.

Donation appeal

- The THTR-Rundbrief is published by 'BI Umwelt Hamm e. V. ' - Postfach 1242 - 59002 Hamm and financed by donations.

- The THTR circular has meanwhile become a much-noticed information medium. However, there are ongoing costs due to the expansion of the website and the printing of additional information sheets.

- The THTR circular researches and reports in detail. In order for us to be able to do that, we depend on donations. We are happy about every donation!
